Inflatable Flowers (Tall Purple, Tall Orange), 1979. When I first moved to New York I started to put inflatables into my artworks, and originally, I included them into paintings, but I wanted the work to be more minimal—more objective. One day I was walking down the street and I saw this store that had inflatable flowers for modern home décor. I went in the store, and I thought—these are perfect. They’re wonderful. I could just buy store-bought display mirrors that are 12 inches by 12 inches, and I could get some acrylic sheets and cut them 12 by 12, and I could just set these inflatable flowers on top, and let them display themselves. What I love about the work is that the reflection is in a slightly different time than the viewing of the surface of the inflatable itself, so it takes us into this metaphysical realm.
